7 Phoenix Unit Members Pass The Chief Scout's Platinum Award
and 1 Gets The Chief Scout's Diamond Award

Some time ago I approached Northern Heights campsite to see if we could go and do some work for them as the Explorers needed to do an environment project for the Chief Scouts award.

I was told the site would be delighted to let us come and do some work for them and happily gave us free accommodation in a modern wooden building that was one of the first buildings to be built for this purpose. It was a small building, which slept 12 very comfortably. It had a small log fire and a very homely feel to it with binoculars in each room to do some bird watching if you wanted.

We did a game of blind date with them for a laugh and to give them something to do. Chris was chosen to play the sexy nurse but whimped out and Richard happily jumped into the role. The three contestants were an Arab terrorist played by Stephen S a gangster played by Phil and a policeman played by Justin. Fiona alias Cilla and me the voice of our Graham. The questions were asked and the contestants who wore wicked costumes had to answer the questions. The gangster got to go on a cruise with the lovely Richadina! An interview went ahead and this followed with the news and weather read by Shane and the copper arrested the Arab terrorist. A great laugh.

We watched a DVD and went to bed and in the morning we set about our task. We had been given the task of working on the area in and around the multi faith centre. We had to build a new pathway and a trench around the edge of the dome building and another path out the other side carved out of a huge mound of wet heavy clay.

We managed to get the new path built with steps being cut into the slopes and sleepers put in to act as steps. This took a few hours and then we were treated to shepherds pie for lunch with a pudding.

After this we set about filling in the new path with flashings, which is small black stones as used in tarmacking. We also had to fill the trench that was a foot wide and about the same deep. There was some 20 tons of the stuff which need to be brought down from the car park we did not use it all but the barrows kept coming and eventually we had to stop because the light had gone and we could not see. We only needed a few more barrows to complete the task.

We gave in and went to chill out for an hour or so before going into town for some dinner. The local chip shop owner’s eyes light up when we walked in. We went back to the hut and had a slide show from mike regarding the Eurotransit stuff he was into and to show us the possible place we may visit to Poland. Followed by another DVD and an early night!

Sunday we got up and had breakfast and set about finishing the task we were set. When we had a look at what was needed we all looked at each other and you could see we were going to struggle. We had to carve a new path out of a huge mound of clay going down to the boardwalk with two steps cut in at the top and another one at the bottom and it was about 4 feet wide and was extremely hard work. At one point we thought it was not going to get done and nearly gave up. We changed tactics and the work started to progress. We finally finished the job about 1-15 with a great deal of satisfaction that we had managed to do what was asked of us. We were told after we had done it that they felt we would only get so far and that they were amazed we had done it all.

The chairlady of the site then told us that they were going to recommend to the committee that the centre could be called the Phoenix centre as we had done such a good job and that we would be able to complete the centre. They named the path Phoenix way.

They also told us that the name would be good as the original chapel was burnt down.

We will have to wait and see what happens. We were duly invited back and were thanked for all our hard work.

We then went back to the centre in uniform to induct both Mathew and Mike into the unit on the groups aged flag and to reaffirm their promises and to keep up with the 201st tradition. We then set about clearing up the hut very knackered and had lunch and made our way home.

I was very proud of the unit and was happy to see such a great team at work. The individual skills that came out were amazing and some of the lads really excelled themselves. Thank you very much for all your hard work and here is to the next weekend third weekend in January to be confirmed to do some more work on the centre.
