Ramey Island Update

We have at last made some serious progress with the instalation of the gates at the campsite. On March 11th 2006 the gate posts were prepared and installed in the holes we dug on the last visit, which needed a bit more digging before they were ok to use. The big bush that was in the way had to be dug out and cut away prior to the posts going in. The posts were treated with bitumen paint and braced into place both sides.

The concrete was mixed which was quite a laugh as we all seemed to get covered with it, especially Paul G. We mixed the concrete with with some hardcore and that was left to set. The part of the path on the environment agency side was marked out, dug and boarded ready to have the mamouth digging out job, at the next work day at the end of April.

We also had resecure the site which was fun, as we had to re stretch the wire fence back in place, using wires and cable ties.

A big thanks to the crew on the day, Paul, Paul, Steve, Alan, Mark and Mark and the wonderful ladies Lesley and Jan who came and fed us as it was such a cold day and they kept us in Tea.

Second Workday
part 2 of the installation has taken place and we now have the gates installed at long last. Some heavy work went on and some 4 ton of type 1 gradings went into the hole we had made for the driveway which had taken hours to dig out because off the roots from the bushes that were there originally.

Paul had hired a rotivator which was hopeless to be honest so the volunteers had to do it the hard way. The Explorers and Network finally found secong gear and we soon began to see the job getting done. We had to go and load up a couple of ton of these gradings by hand but apart from that the work eventually got finished. The explorers enjoyed using the wacker plate to compact the stones down. Paul and myself eneded up going back on the sunday to finish the fence and paint the posts and put the signs up and lastly secure it all up.

A huge thanks to all the crew again a masive thanks to Paul M for all his very hard efforts. Also Paul G and Amy, Steve P, and the explorers Sarah,Gemma,Stephen D,Phil, Martin and the network Stephen S and Shane, and of course Lesley and Jan
